Wellington history

When Harvard-educated businessman Charles Oliver Wellington purchased 18,000 acres of land in the 1950s, he named the new property the Flying Cow Ranch. A keen aviator, Wellington used Flying Cow Road as a landing strip for his planes. Wellington’s agent, Arthur Glisson, managed the property, eventually purchasing and reselling parcels of this land to Florida farmers in the 1960s. During this time, the settlement featured the world’s largest strawberry patch, which covered 2,000 acres with brightly hued berries.

The Acme Drainage District, created by the State of Florida, managed the Flying Cow’s infrastructure over the years to enable farming. Developers like the Investment Corporation of Florida and Alcoa Florida, Inc. built up many of Wellington’s most notable features in the 1970s. These included a new golf course, the Wellington Club, Lake Wellington and the town’s first residential neighborhoods. By 1995, the former Acme Improvement District and Flying Cow Ranch incorporated as the new Village of Wellington.
